The small healer, Lavender, walked into her friend Takeo's office, his head buried in paperwork, most of it already done. She timidly stood in the doorway, waiting for him to turn, but he never did, which caused her to have to speak up.
"I-Ito-san." she said softly, playing with her fingers as she waited for a response. It took a few moments, him scribbling down a few more words before he sat up, turning to look at her, his eyes in their usual closed position.
"What is it Florence?" he asked, using the nickname he gave her years ago.
She looked at the ground as she spoke, "We have been assigned a mission." she said quietly, shifting her feet lightly. "We need to go with a few other shinigami and they have assigned me for any wounds." Takeo stood and nodded.
"Well alright. Although I do find it strange they'd send a healer." he said, looking at the short girl before walking out the door. "Well, the sooner we get started, the better." he said, Lavender nodding and following him out.
The two met up with the other shinigami immediately, all of them agreeing to start the mission right away. It was a group of five cocky fighters, ones who'd kill the other just to get the final kill, these being Takeo had the hardest time working with. He liked strategy, being calm and collected, making a plan of attack rather than charging in and getting those you worked with hurt. The males behind him were all talking about their bravado and how they'd do anything to get a finishing kill, or to be the one to report back to the head Captain about how great they did, not together as a group. He sighed as he walked, anger slowly ebbing its way up to the surface, making the brown haired man grit his teeth in annoyance. But that quickly faded away when Lavender placed her small hand on his arm, her usual timid smile on her face when he was around.
"Don't get mad Ito-san. Just ignore them and you'll do great." She said, Takeo immediately smiling at her gentle words.
"Thanks Florence." He replied, trying his best to ignore the conceited males behind both of them. The only time he turned to face them was when they arrived at the area for their mission. "Listen up!" he called, the men ceasing their conversation and looking at him. "Don't be stupid in there! Don't rush in, keep a level head..." as Takeo kept reciting his usual ways of fighting, the men ignored him and ran past him, shouting and whooping about the first kill, final kill etc. Takeo sighed and dropped his head, shaking it.
"Don't worry Ito-san. That's why I'm here." Lavender said sympathetically, holding her hands up, which were already glowing green, her already prepared for the first injury. Takeo chuckled and rustled Lavender's hair, smiling softly, which he only did around her.
"Just stay safe alright Lav?" he spoke, concern almost in his voice. Lavender paused but nodded and smiled, the glow in her hands now even brighter. Takeo turned and quickly flash stepped to the other soul reapers, who seemed to be already in combat. Takeo cursed under his breath at their idiocy and took out his blade, ready for battle. He followed where the sound was coming from and saw the others being overwhelmed with an enormous amount of hollows. They were fighting, yes, but not as good as they could of if they'd at least prepared for this. Takeo thought angrily in his head and scanned the area, seeing that these were more evolved hollows, almost looking human like. He cursed again and assessed their strength, seeing they were fairly good fighters, enough to challenge this group at least. Takeo shook his head and leapt in, fighting the nearest hollow.
Takeo was fighting non-stop, sweat glistening down his face, dropping to the cold earth beneath him as he shoved a hollow away, trying to hide has panting. Lavender had already began to heal a soul reaper who hadn't been paying attention and got sliced up the back. Even though she was safe at the distance she was, Takeo ordered her to put up a kido barrier, just in case the monsters they were fighting turned their attention onto her. She watched Takeo with worried eyes as she healed the soul reaper, but only a part of her attention on that because of the barrier she had up. He was tiring, she could see that, and the other soul reapers weren't going to help. They were a one man show who only cared about their selves and their own safety, not others. Lavender wanted to help, but she knew Takeo would never allow it, never in a situation like this. He wouldn't want her to get hurt and Lavender knew that, so she made it a point to not distract him. She looked away from her feverishly fighting friend and focused on the soul reaper who needed her help, the kido barrier now in the back of her mind as she tried to heal him as quickly as possible.
"Aye!" the male said below her. "Can ya' hurry it up?! I'm missin' a good fight!" he shouted loudly, too loudly for a hollow heard, but neither of the two realizing it. Lavender nodded and tried to hurry the healing process, the kido barrier nearly failing. The hollow slowly creeped it's way over, before it leapt, swinging it's long claws downward, towards the kido barrier. Takeo glanced over, just in time, shouting at Lavender to move. Her eyes darted up just as the hollow ripped through the wall, slamming it's claws straight through the male's torso, only landing a scratch on Lavender's cheek. The male screamed as the hollow lifted him up high, over its head and screeched with pride just as it brought it's other claws up, slicing the head clean off, a rain of blood pouring down. Lavender, who was not use to such violence, watched fearfully, her eyes wide, tears filling them. Takeo struggled with an enemy, his arms shaking as it pressed against him with great strength but still managed to look over at Lavender.
"What are you doing?! Run! Lavender run!" he shouted, snapping the girl back into reality as she stood and began to run as quickly as she could, the hollow giving chase. She quickly and gracefully spun around, the area around her lighting up a bright red as she shot off a Shakkahō, though the hollow took it as if it were nothing. She ducked and dodged anything that got in her way, but the hollow still followed, smashing the things out of its way. Lavender panted as she ran, stumbling and tripping as he small legs began to tire out. But the girl kept running until she found herself back out onto the main area of battle again, though things had changed drastically, her stopping with a gasp. The other four Shinigami's bodies littered the floor, though Takeo still remained upright, though cut on the side. Lavender watched as he fought, knowing it pained him.
He, of course, would brush it off as nothing but a cut, but Lavender knew it was holding him back, she'd seen enough of these injuries. She glanced around to see one of the Shinigami still alive, though groaning and writhing on the floor. Lavender ran over to help, but stopped as she saw the hollow do the same thing to him as it did to the one she healed. Once again, she froze, too stunned to do anything, her mind reeling, thinking of that happening to Takeo. A soon as that though entered her mind, everything was silent, not fighting or shouts were heard, because fear took over. Her eyes though, moved from the Shinigami, to Takeo, who was running towards her, shouting something urgently, his face no doubt as fearful as hers. Just as Lavender was about to speak, she felt something pierce her stomach and rip through her skin. She glanced down, though her vision was blurred, and saw the hollows claws, dripping with her blood. Her mouth filled up with a thick, coppery liquid and she parted her lips, the crimson fluid streaming to the ground like a sick waterfall. Takeo stopped dead in his tracks, staring at it for a few moments before the hollow began to lift Lavender up, her screaming out.
"Hold on! Lavender hold on!" Takeo managed to choke out as he sprinted for her, her now fully above its head, claws rising to finish. Takeo picked up the speed, not going to let this end here. With lungs burning, but pulled his blade and slammed it right into the hollow's head, it immediately going limp and collapsing. Takeo carefully slid Lavender off his claws, kneeling down and holding her in his lap. Her chin was covered in blood as she looked up at him, trying as hard as she could to focus on him.
"I'm sorry." she said too quietly, her dark skin turning pale, turning too quickly. Takeo knit his eyebrows together and held Lavender tightly, holding her in his arms as he stood.
"Hold on Lavender. This isn't going to end here understand. Just hold on." he said angrily. Though he wasn't angry at her, he was angry at himself for letting this happen. Lavender gripped him tightly as he began to walk, slowly losing consciousness.
"I'm sorry." she whispered. I'm sorry for leaving you. she finished in her head.
