Chapter One: Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)
The rain poured down onto her face, coating her immediately, draping her ebony bangs down in front of her lime green eyes making it nearly impossible to see. She pushed the hair back to the top of her head, glancing around, trying to get an idea of where she was. A road... a... dark one... no street lights, but a long drop to the left of the road, and a tall, rocky bit of land to the right of it. It looked familiar... so... familiar. Where had she seen it? She racked her brain for it, feeling a small sense of familiarity, just what she needed until-- screeching tires slammed against the girl's ears, causing her to stumble with surprise and whip her head towards the thought shattering sound.
She froze, caught like a dear in headlights as she realized what this place was. She saw them, in the front seats, their faces filled with fear as the male struggled to gain back control of the car, his hands turning the steering wheel this way, that way, grinding the car up against the tall wall as the rain caused the car to slip and slide, nearing the girl's current location. Her heartbeat amplified, filling her ears, making her scream just as the car rammed her body, blowing her backwards, filling her with pain. Just as she landed, someone shouted her name, pulling her from her nightmare.
She clutched her chest as she sat straight up in bed, eyes still squeezed shut, cold sweat already soaking the single sheet around her along with small beads running down her face. Her sheets were tangled around her due to her kicking her legs about, tears streaming down her face accompanying the small tremors she felt rush through her, the pain from that nightmare still with her.
Her breathing was heavy as she slowly opened her eyes, although it quickly calmed as she saw through dim lighting her familiar, messy room. Letting out a sigh of relief, she shoved her blankets off her and slid herself out of her bed, yawning groggily. She tiredly shuffled over to her dresser, rubbing her face tiredly to try to wake herself up. Once she arrived at the dresser, she dropped her head down onto the top of it and yawned.
" she said in between yawns. "one night of full sleep." In fact, Rei hadn't gotten any sleep this whole week due to the first few hours full of tossing and turning, s couple hours sometimes taken up by her roommate's
moans and pounding against the wall, and the last few hours were full of on and off sleep, then finally waking up due to an awful nightmare.
It was becoming routine for Rei, one she truly hated. With regret, she slowly opened her eyes and slowly pulled open a drawer, pulling out a tank top and short shorts, sliding them on, continuing her yawns in the process. She shuffled over to her door and pulled it open as far as she could, before the pile of clothes on the floor stopped her. With a groan, she squeezed her small body out the door and tromped down the short hallway, nearing the kitchen where you could hear a loud, deep, beautiful Columbian accent singing.
"Ay amor me duele tanto, me duele tanto. Que te fueras sin decir a dónde, ay amor, fue una tortura perderte." a mocha-skinned woman sang as she was cooking at the stove. Her body was curvy, dressed in a bra and matching undies, the color was a mixture of black and red. Her hair was long and wavy, reaching down to her mid-back, which accompanied her hazel eyes. On the left side of her face, beside her eye, she had dark black star tattoos, which accompanied the dark black cat eyed; wing eyeliner that constantly accented her eyes.
Her arms had full-sleeved tattoos with multiple designs of koi fish and bright, beautiful colors that bounced off her skin. On her back was a tattoo above her bottom was a tribal looking one of a black phoenix. On her shoulder blade were three black birds, which looked like they were flying off, the one at the bottom the largest, and the one at the top the smallest. To the left of her left breast was a design of roses and leaves that consisted of soft colors. Through her singing, Rei cleared her throat, raising her eyebrow at the woman, who was half-dressed. She stopped what she was doing and turned her head to look back at Rei.
"Hola Rei. How did joo sleep?" she asked, a sly smile on her face, turning back to the food she was currently cooking. Rei's expression quickly turned annoyed, her tine deeply sarcastic.
"Oh you know, apart from your moans and screams, it was great Ruby." she said angrily, crossing her arms across her chest. Ruby chuckled as she moved the pan on the stove around. Rei tiredly walked over to the countertop behind Ruby and pulled out a glass, filling it with coffee from the pot next to her. "How did you sleep?" Rei asked while she drank some of the coffee from its glass, hopping up onto the counter. Ruby left the food she was cooking and grabbed two plates, placing the food from the pan onto them.
" she smiled and handed Rei a plate, which consisted of eggs, sausage and
mooshy looking hash browns. "I sleep like a baby. I have no idea what joo hear at night. For real though, how did joo sleep?" She chuckled again and pulled out two forks, giving one to Rei and keeping one for herself. Rei snorted and took the fork, cutting into the eggs and eating some.
"I'm sure that I'm just going crazy." She said while eating more of her food. "And I slept
" she impersonated Ruby's thick accent. "Joo know
like a baby." Ruby raised an eyebrow and shook her head.
"It doesn't seem that way. Your sleeping moods-"
sleeping patterns." Rei corrected.
"Whatever. They always get much more
out of the pattern the week of your birth of date." Ruby said, eating some of the sausage, eggs and hash brown together. "And additionally, these dreammares you always have are getting worse." Ruby said while she chewed, looking at Rei, partially concerned. Rei shrugged her comment off and finished off her food, speaking with a full mouth.
"Iffss noff like iffs a bigf deeaallf." She said, her mouth full, food dribbling out as she spoke. "Immm arrready rate ferr work. Goffa go!" Ruby widened her eyes and leaned back, away from the food, her face disgusted.
"Idiota! Que se está derramando la comida de todo aquí!" she shouted as she stepped away from Rei, giving her a heavy glare. "If you're late then go, before you make a bigger mess!" Rei chuckled and hopped off the counter, sucking her meal down with a large gulp of coffee.
"Where are the toothbrushes?" Rei asked, as she looked around frantically. Ruby handed Rei a toothbrush and tooth paste, which the dark haired girl used to brush her teeth quickly in the sink. "Thanks Ruby." Rei nodded and walked to the front door, grabbing a small black handbag, slinging it over her shoulder.
"Oi! And while you're out, get a new bag. That one is god damn ugly!!" Ruby shouted as Rei walked out the door. Rei poked her head back in, and shouted back.
"Yeah and maybe you should get some clothes!"
"At least I have more to show than you Rei!"
"Yeah, just cause I'm not a street walker!" she laughed angrily and shut the door as Ruby threw a pillow at the door. "Okay bye!" with an exhausted yawn, Rei stretched and yawned, beginning to walk to her job, wondering how the hell she'd get through it with such little sleep.
